Songwriting Camp

 

Leader: Carmen Braden, songwriter/composer from Yellowknife, NW. Masters of Music in Composition, extensive experience in music education and creation with groups and individuals, especially youth. Nominee of the Western Canada Music Awards, 2017 performer with Stratford Summer Music and composer/sound designer for Stratford Festival’s “The Breathing Hole”.

What Is Songwriting Camp?

Young songwriters participate in a 4 day camp with Carmen Braden to write original songs. Each camp of students will create one group song and each individual young songwriter will create at least one individual song. Young songwriters receive an audio recording of the group song and their individual song, as well as notated versions of the songs as a pdf.


Two camps, maximum 10 young songwriters per camp

(max 20 participants total).

Younger camp - mornings 9am-12pm. Ages 9-12

Older camp - afternoons 1pm - 4pm. Ages 13-17

When? July 24 - 27, 2018

What happens at the Camp?

- Introduction to the music of songwriters in Canada, including musical break-downs of existing songs.

- Lyric writing techniques

- Melody writing techniques

- Basic notation and chord progressions

- Harmony and timbre exploration

- a recording session and introduction to using easily-accessible music technology to record and create music with computers

- a final songwriters circle, open to parents and friends at 7 pm, Friday, July 27, 2018


What is Required of Camp Participants?

- Desire to be creative in music! No previous songwriting experience necessary.

- Some music experience required - can be a love of singing, experience in school band or choir, one year on any instrument, etc.

- Bring an instrument (optional, but strongly recommended) i.e. keyboard, guitar, etc. Anyone without an instrument can have a keyboard, guitar or drums loaned, thanks to Yamaha Music.


 What is the Daily Schedule?

Day 1 - The Bones of Song

- Listening exercise - Music Makers in Canada Part 1 - a brief history of songwriters in Canada, including musical analysis/break-down of an existing song.

- Compose a Group Song with verse, chorus, bridge

- Lyric writing techniques

- Melody writing techniques

- Basic notation and chord progressions

Day 2 - Building the Music Beyond First Steps

- Listening exercise - Music Makers in Canada Part 2 - a brief history of composers in Canada, including ideas of soundscapes, cultural connections, music beyond the pop

culture.

- Compose Individual Song

- Expand on lyric, melody, chord progressions

- Harmony and timbre exploration

- Form and structure

- Improvisation

Day 3 - Bringing the Music to Others

- Listening exercise - Music Makers in Canada Part 3 - contemporary music that the participants themselves are listening to.

- Recording session and introduction to using easily-accessible music technology to record and create music with computers.

- Continue Individual Songs

- Arrangements, Notation

- Performance preparation

- Write additional pieces (time permitting)

- Album Art drawing for their song (time permitting)

Day 4 - Music in the Future

- Wrap up final songs, notation, recordings

- Practice performance

- Tools to making music after camp is completed

- 1 hour Songwriter Circle - a casual performance open to parents and friends


Creative Developments through Songwriting Camp

Promotes confidence in individual creativity and in public performance settings.

Encourages independent and self-critical thinking.

Engages in team-creative activities.

Intersects different creative and artistic realms, i.e. poetry and words become lyrics

Introduces influential, interesting, and active songwriters and composers in Canada through listening, discussion and analysis.

Provides tools for musical analysis of favourite songs in order to learn how they work, and why they are awesome, and therefore how young songwriters can use what they learn in their own

Demonstrates music-as-career possibilities including songwriting, composing, performing, music technology, music education.
