Beautifully set in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta is the town of Banff where every three years the Banff International String Quartet Competition attracts the most promising and dynamic young string quartets of the world. The most recent competition, in 2016, presented ten quartets from four continents. It was a Canadian ensemble, The Rolston String Quartet, which took top honours.
The Rolston String Quartet was formed in the summer of 2013 at Banff Centre's Chamber Music Residency, taking their name after the Canadian violinist Thomas Rolston, the founder and longtime director of the Music and Sound Programs at the Centre. The Quartet has performed throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe, appearing in such venues as the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, Koerner Hall in Toronto, and at the Auditorium de Bordeaux, France. Currently as the Graduate Quartet-in-Residence at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music in Houston, Texas, the Rolstons have also participated in residencies and fellowships at the Académie musicale de Villecroze, Aspen Colorado Music Festival, Banff Centre, McGill International String Quartet Academy, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Robert Mann String Quartet Institute in Manhattan, and the Yehudi Menuhin Chamber Music Festival in San Francisco.
In a season where we are introducing important young Canadian musicians to our audiences, Stratford Summer Music is delighted to welcome violinists Luri Lee and Jeffrey Dyrda, violist Hezekiah Leung and cellist Jonathan Lo.
