The Coffee and Cappuccino Cantatas

The Coffee Cantata by J.S. Bach - Featuring Simon Chalifoux, Elizabeth Polese and Asitha Tennekoon

What does it take to be a liberated young woman in the 1700’s?  A hint: “Oooh! How my coffee really hits the spot, more exquisite than a thousand kisses. I have to have my coffee,” sings Lieschen, the daughter of Schlendrian (Mr. Stick-in-the-Mud) in this comic mini-opera written in 1733.

Join us at revel, a popular coffee house on Market Square, to enjoy the fun just as coffee drinkers did three hundred years ago at Zimmerman’s Coffee House in Leipzig, Germany where Bach and his buddies performed this masterpiece and laughed at the antics of a determined young woman pitted against her stern, anxious father.

Three performances in English, with keyboard accompaniment and staging by Peter Tiefenbach.

Now it’s three centuries later – 2018 - and strong coffee is still very much in fashion.  So are young lovers and tricky scenarios in Stratford.  Gordon manages a coffee bar.  He’s smitten with his barista, Stephanie, but she has a crush on the ‘boy with the MacBook’ who comes in every day.  One can’t always get what one desires!

Three performances in Double Espresso with creation, keyboard accompaniment and staging by Peter Tiefenbach.
